One Kidney Climb “3 VOLCANOES CHALLENGE”
For those of you who follow Dylan’s Journey, you know that his sister Darcie was his initial donor in February 2019. If you know Darcie, you’re certainly aware of her active lifestyle. She might be busier today than before she donated her spare. Having one kidney hasn’t slowed her down one bit. She continues to be an advocate for organ donation and has coached many through the process of testing and surgery. One of those is Julie Tucker.
In 2017 Darcie met Julie, the sister of a close friend, and kept in contact over the years. In 2018 Julie saw our plea for a living donor and selflessly called Yale New Haven Hospital to see if she was a match. As we know Darcie was the best match for Dylan, but Julie knew kidney donation would be something she’d like to do if the opportunity came up again. She would have that chance after meeting a woman in her local yoga class who was going on the kidney transplant list. After finding out she was a match, she graciously shared her spare in October 2022.
Julie now has taken her active lifestyle and dedication to being a living donor to the next level. This December she will join 17 other Kidney Donor Athletes from all over the world in the Kidney Donor Athletes - One Kidney Climb - 3 Volcanoes Challenge in Guatemala, to help raise awareness of what is possible post-donation. That’s right, hiking 3 volcanoes, totaling over 12,000 vertical feet, in 4 days! There is really nothing you need two kidneys for, that can’t be done with one.
Julie will be wearing a “Dylan’s Journey” t-shirt on her climb to amplify support for Dylan’s search for a living donor. 💚 We can’t thank her enough for sharing our story.
